More than two months since my last post. Oops. In my defense, we've just moved house! Just before we moved, I finished the two projects I mentioned in the last post.

Plus de deux mois depuis mon dernier message. Oups. Mais, en ma défense, on vient de déménager ! Juste avant de déménager, j'ai terminé les deux projets mentionnés dans le dernier message.

Unfortunately, this came out too big for my sister! The hardest part of knitting for someone in another country is that you can't test the size along the way. Happily, this is a pretty simply design and my sister likes it enough to want another in the next smaller size, so it looks like I may make another one for Christmas!

Malheureusement, celui-ci est trop grand pour ma sœur ! La chose la plus difficile quand on tricote pour quelqu’un d’autre qui est dans un autre pays est qu’on ne peut pas l’essayer mi-travail. La bonne nouvelle est que c’est un dessin simple et ma sœur l’aime tant qu’elle en veut un deuxième dans la taille dessous, donc il apparait qu’il faut en refaire encore un pour Noël !

I am very pleased with this one! I showed it to my mother in law and asked if she would like something like this and she said yes, so there's some more Christmas knitting to put on the list! My grandmother loves it and my sister told me that she proudly showed it to anyone that walked in the door. I was sad that we couldn't be there to celebrate her 90th birthday so I'm glad I could make something that she will enjoy.

Je suis bien contente avec celui-ci ! Je l’ai montré à ma belle-mère et je lui ai demandé si elle voudrait quelque chose de semblable et la réponse était « oui » donc voila encore un tricot pour Noël ! Ma grand-mère l’adore et ma sœur m’a raconté qu’elle l’avait fièrement montré à tout le monde. J’étais déçu qu’on ne pouvait pas être là pour fêter ses 90 ans donc je suis heureuse de pouvoir fabriquer quelque chose qui lui plaît.

Et maintenant, pour ceux qui sont toujours là, j’ai une annonce à faire ! J’ai enfin publié les patrons de trois de mes sacs médiévaux et ils sont disponibles pour le prix super bas de quatre euros sur Ravelry ! (Par contre, ils sont uniquement disponible en anglais pour le moment ; si il y a une demande je peux faire un effort pour les traduire.) Vous aurez non seulement les directions et le graphique pour le jacquard, mais aussi les travaux pratiques avec des photos pour apprendre à faire un cordon de dix fils et un de quatre fils. J’ai eu beaucoup d’aide de la part du groupe « pattern testers » sur Ravelry, pour lequel je suis bien reconnaissante. birthday gifts / les cadeaux d'anniversaires

Two of my current projects are for birthday presents. I've had this baby blue bulky yarn in my stash for a long time. It has always made me think of my sister but I couldn't find a project I liked with her in mind. Finally I just asked her, and together we found a pattern that we both like and goes perfectly with this yarn!

Deux de mes projets actuels sont des cadeaux d’anniversaires. J’avais cette laine, bleue claire et épaisse, depuis longtemps. Elle m’a toujours fait penser à ma sœur mais j’avais du mal à trouver un projet pour elle. Enfin je lui ai simplement demandé et ensemble on a trouvé un patron qui nous plaît à toutes les deux et va parfaitement avec la laine !

The pattern is called Camellia. This is the back, but the construction is unusual so it doesn't exactly cover all of the back. I can't wait to see it finished!

Le patron s’appelle Camellia. Voici le dos, mais la construction n’est pas commune car il ne couvre pas tout le dos. J’ai hâte de le voir fini !

I am also working on a special project for a very special lady: my grandmother will be celebrating her 90th birthday this year. She is in amazing health, still extremely active in her community and her church, and she is a very important hero to me!!

Je fais aussi un projet spécial pour une dame très spéciale : ma grand-mère fêtera ses 90 ans cette année ! Elle est en très bonne santé, elle est super active dans sa communauté et son église, et elle est une héroïne très particulier pour moi !!

I hope she will love this Falling Leaves Wrap, which doesn't look like much right now, but I still have three skeins to go!

Hello and thank you to anyone that is still checking in here! It has been a very difficult five months for me, both physically and emotionally, but mostly emotionally. As you may know, I finally found a job in December after five years of living here in France. Sadly, the company I worked for didn't care much for their employees and after only two months I was the last one that was still there when I was hired! My contract ended after three months and was not renewed. Though I don't regret working at this job at all (I finally have my very own social security number, we were able to save some money and have some extra goodies), it left me exhausted and depressed.

Bonjour et merci à tous qui jettent un œil ici de temps en temps ! J’ai passé cinq mois difficiles, dans le corps et l’esprit, mais plutôt l’esprit. Comme vous pouvez savoir, j’ai enfin trouvé un travail en décembre après cinq ans en France. Malheureusement, l’entreprise ne prend pas beaucoup soin de ses employées, et après à peine deux mois j’étais la doyenne du bureau ! Ce n’était qu’un contrat de trois mois et ils ne m’ont pas embauché pour plus. Je n’ai aucun regret (j’ai enfin mon propre numéro de sécu et on a mis des sous à coté et même s’est amusé un petit peu) mais à la fin j’étais épuisée et découragée.

Now, at last, I am finally coming out of the darkness and things are looking up. We are in the process of buying an apartment, and are saving enough money that I may be able to start a business eventually. My sweet son is 18 months old now and is doing extremely well, even if he is sometimes stuck to me like glue! And most important, at least for the blog, is that I've picked up my knitting needles at long last.

Enfin je sors de l’obscurité et la vie est plus belle. On est en train d’acheter un appartement qui va nous permettre de garder plus de sous et peut-être que je vais pouvoir créer ma propre entreprise un jour. Mon fils a 18 mois et il va super bien, même si des fois il est collé à moi ! Mais le plus important, pour ce blog bien sûr, est qu’après cette période difficile j’ai encore les aiguilles dans les mains.

First, I finished the first sleeve of the Beau sweater, but my poor husband will have to wait for yet another winter to wear it. Then I started a very simple project for an afghan with yarn I've had in my stash for a few years now. And then I felt the need to challenge myself with this:

So, you might be wondering what is happening with the Etsy shop. It broke my heart to have to close it, even temporarily. Now that I've had some time to think, I feel like this is the moment to change the direction of the shop. What I really love about the work I do is the design process for my bags and banners and other accessories. So, I've decided to write up my patterns and release them into the wild. Right now, my first pattern is being tested and soon I'll be converting more of my projects into patterns. However, since we'll be moving in a couple of months and I will likely lose internet access for a couple of weeks, I will probably wait until we are settled before I release them. In the meantime, I can continue blogging here and show you what I'm working on. For now, it just feels really good to be back!

Alors, peut-être que vous vous demandez ce qui se passe avec la boutique Etsy. Cela m’a brisé le cœur de la fermer, même si c’est temporaire. Maintenant que j’ai un moment pour réfléchir, je pense que c’est l’heure de changer la direction de la boutique. Ce que j’aime bien est la méthode pour dessiner les sacs et bannières et les autres accessoires. Donc, j’ai décidé de créer des patrons de mes projets et les relâcher dans la nature. Actuellement, mon premier patron est en cours d’être testé et bientôt je convertirai les autres projets vers de nouveaux patrons aussi. Mais, comme on déménagera dans deux ou trois mois et que je perdrai ma connexion internet pendant quelques semaines, il est bien possible que j’attendrai jusqu'à ce que nous soyons installés pour les mettre en vente. Entre-temps, je vais continuer d’écrire ici et vous montrer ce que je fais. Au moins, je peux dire que ça fait du bien d’être de retour !

I've only just started a new banner for my challenge entry this week, so there isn't much to see yet:

J’ai tout juste commencé une nouvelle bannière pour mon défi de la semaine, donc il n’y a pas grand chose à voir :

It's so dark here and it's only 2:30 in the afternoon! I really need a lamp for my desk but there's no room! Anyway, you can see the bird, which is my inspiration for this week's challenge, but to be honest, this idea was already in my head, and the challenge gave me the opportunity to move it to the front of the queue!

Il fait si noir ici, et il n’est pas que 14 :30 ! J’ai besoin d’une lampe pour mon bureau mais je n’ai pas de place ! En tout cas, on peut voir l’oiseau, qui est mon inspiration pour le défi de la semaine , mais pour être honnête, cette idée était déjà dans ma tête et le défi me donne l’excuse pour la faire toute suite.

My fairy arrived all the way from Lithuania today! She is now comfortably installed above my computer, where I do most of my work.

flying fairies and a challenge entry / des fées qui volent et un défi réussi

I finally jumped into the fairy game and caught a fairy on my first try! My fairy is coming from Aldona in Lithuania. I'll be sure to show her off when she gets here. Of course, then it was my turn to release a fairy and she went just as quickly!

Et hop ! Je me suis lancée dans le jeu des fées et j’en ai attrapée une au mon premier essai ! Ma fée viens de Aldona en Lituanie. Bien sur, je vous montrerai quand elle arrivera ! Ensuite ce fut à moi de relâcher une fée et elle a été prise aussi vite !

Very soon this fairy will be flying to Thongbai in The Netherlands.

I really fell in love with the process of designing and creating this banner, and that carried over into my weekly challenge entry. This week it's being hosted by Inger and the theme is mythology. It took me a few tries to get this new design right, but I'm really pleased with the result:

I actually have two things going on the needles this week, plus a third in the planning stages that I'll probably start knitting tonight or tomorrow! It's been a difficult couple of weeks here for knitting. My son was quite sick, and then I caught what he had. I finally restarted the neck warmer that I showed you last week, but I tried to knit when I was sick, which meant making some silly mistakes and having to go back a few rows. At least I still have something to show you!

En fait j’ai deux projets sous les aiguilles cette semaine, plus un troisième dans ma tête que je commencerai ce soir ou demain matin ! Ce fut quelques semaines difficiles ici pour le tricot. Mon fils était malade, et puis j’ai attrapé sa maladie. Enfin j’ai recommencé le cache-col que je vous ai montré la semaine dernière. J’ai essayé de tricoter quand j’étais malade, mais j’ai fait des bêtises et j’avais besoin de refaire quelques rangs. Au moins j’ai une petite chose à vous montrer !

I love these two colors together! I'm not a real fan of pink I fell in love when I put these two together.

J’adore ces deux couleurs ensemble ! Je ne suis pas trop fan du rose mais je suis tombée amoureuse quand j’ai mis les deux à coté.

This next one is a sneak peek for my friends in the European Street Team. We are playing a "Catch the Fairy" game, in which you must catch a fairy and then offer one up for sale. I'm finally working on mine and hoping I'm not too late! Of course, this is only a part of my fairy, for the whole thing you'll have to wait until I catch one!

I've been working on a new design these last few days, but my first version of a neck warmer isn't right.

Ces derniers jours j’ai travaillé sur un nouveau dessin, mais le premier modèle d’un cache-col n’est pas bon.

At first I wanted to knit it in the round and then cut it, then I realized it was big enough to go over my head. The problem is that it isn't strong enough to stand up on its own, so it really needs to be a lot shorter, and closed with buttons. I'm starting a new one today knit flat instead of in the round. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll be able to show you version two!

Je voulais le tricoter dans le rond et puis le couper, mais en tricotant j’ai réalisé que ce serait assez grand pour passer ma tête. Le problème est qu’il n’est pas assez ferme pour rester debout tout seul, donc il faut vraiment qu’il soit plus court et fermé avec les boutons. Je recommence aujourd’hui et je tricote à plat plutôt que dans le rond. J’espère qu’en fin de semaine j’aurais la version deux à vous montrer !

Today I'm taking a break from knitting a new bag to make a few granny squares. Baahar is hosting a granny square blanket project for the Etsy European Street Team. She is asking for 7 cm squares in cotton yarn.

Aujourd’hui je mets de coté mon projet tricot pour faire quelques grannys. Baahar est la chef d’un projet couverture granny pour l’Etsy European Street Team. Elle rassemble des grannys de 7 cm fait en coton.

My yarn is a bit thicker than hers, so my squares only have three rounds, but I'm loving these colors that I pulled from my stash. I've never made traditional granny squares before and I love how easy they are! I'll definitely come back to them in the future!

Ma laine est plus épaisse que la sienne, donc mes carrés n’ont que trois tours, mais j’aime bien ces couleurs que j’ai trouvé dans mes laines. Je n’avais jamais fait de grannys traditionnels et j’adore comme ils sont faciles à faire ! C’est sur que j’en referai d’autres plus tard !

a pleasant surprise / une jolie surprise

We went away for a few days and I had a very pleasant surprise waiting for me in my mailbox when we got home! I'd had a discussion about books by Madeleine L'Engle on the Etsy European Street Team forum with Emily of Ravenhill, who was reading one of her books to her son. She very kindly offered to send me the book when she was done with it, even though Fry won't be ready for it for a few more years, but I didn't expect her to include one of her adorable matryoshkas!

On est parti pendant quelques jours et j’ai eu une jolie surprise qui m’a attendu dans la boîte aux lettres en rentrant ! J’ai parlé des livres de Madeleine L’Engle sur le forum d’Etsy European Street Team avec Emily de Ravenhill, qui a lu un de ses livres avec son fils. Elle a gentiment offert de me l’envoyer après l’avoir fini, même si Fry n’est pas prêt pour le moment. Je ne m’attendais pas à ce qu’elle m’envoie une des ses adorables matryoshkas !

This darling matryoshka is currently cheering up our sideboard and she makes me smile every time I see her. As if that weren't enough, she even sent us a very timely tissue packet!

Cette charmante matryoshka est actuellement sur notre buffet et elle me fait sourire chaque fois que je la vois. Et si ça n’est pas assez, elle m’a aussi envoyé une boîte à mouchoirs !

I've been wanting to show you another part of my crafting process, so today I'm going to talk about blocking. After I've knit each piece, they are soaked in water for a couple of hours and then pinned out while they dry so they will keep their shape.

Unfortunately, I don't have a professional blocking board, so I've stolen one of Fry's puzzle mat squares, which works perfectly! I'm thinking of buying my own set just for blocking! Here are a couple of bookmarks that I've just pinned out:

Je voulais vous montrer une partie différente de mon processus créatif, donc aujourd’hui je parle de blocage. Après avoir tricoté chaque pièce, elles sont trempées dans l’eau pour deux heures et puis épinglées pendant qu’elles sèchent pour garder leurs formes.

Malheureusement, je n’ai pas de planche pour bloquer, donc j’ai piqué un carré du tapis puzzle de Fry, qui marche très bien ! Je pense acheter mon propre tapis uniquement pour bloquer !

Usually, smaller pieces are dry within 24 hours, while bags can often take two days to dry. The bags aren't pinned down like this, but the ends are pinned together so they are less likely to roll down.

Normalement, les petites pièces sont sèches dans les 24 heures, mais cela prend souvent deux jours pour les sacs. Les sacs ne sont pas épinglés comme les autres, mais les bouts sont épinglés ensemble pour éviter qu’ils se roulent.

Since I've started my shop at Etsy, I've joined a super group of sellers called the European Street Team. We are a diverse group of artists and quite a few countries are represented. They have welcomed me with open arms and are very encouraging and supportive, I couldn't have found a better group! Every week, the group has a themed challenge and this week it's Back to Nature.

Depuis que j’ai ouvert mon magasin à Etsy, j’ai rejoint un groupe sympa de vendeurs qui s’appelle l’European Street Team. Nous sommes un groupe divers et il y pas mal de pays représentés. Ils m’ont accueillie les bras ouverts et ils sont très encourageants et positifs. Je ne pouvais pas trouver un meilleur groupe ! Chaque semaine, le groupe a un défi à thème et cette semaine c’est Retour à la nature.

It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do and I finally fell on this. It's kind of hard to tell, but it's leaves in alternating colors and directions. I'm only about three inches into it and I have at least four more to go. Hopefully I can get it all done before the Monday evening deadline! I don't think this pattern is especially medieval, but I think this color combination is perfect for autumn leaves.

Il m’a pris un moment pour décider ce que je voulais faire et enfin j’ai trouvé celle-ci. Peut-être que c’est difficile à voir mais ce sont des feuilles dont les couleurs alternes ainsi que des directions. Je n’ai fait que 8 cm et il me reste au moins 10 cm à faire. J’espère l’avoir fini avant la fin du défi, lundi prochain ! Je ne sais pas si ce motif est particulièrement médiéval, mais j’aime bien ces couleurs ensemble pour les feuilles d’automne.

Another hat for Fry / Encore un bonnet pour Fry

Not too long ago, I realized that the weather was getting cooler, especially in the mornings when Fry and I take our long walk through Tiny Town, and he didn't have anything to keep his head warm! Of course I couldn't buy him a hat when I have a closet full of yarn and plenty of knitting needles. Searching on Ravlery, I found this pattern and I simply fell in love:

Il n’y a pas longtemps, j’ai remarqué que le temps commence à rafraîchir, particulièrement les matins quand Fry et moi nous promenons dans Tiny Town, et il n’a même pas un truc pour garder sa tête au chaud ! Mais bien sûr je ne peux pas lui acheter quelque chose alors que j’ai une armoire pleine de laine et d’aiguilles. Cherchant sûr Ravelry, j’ai trouvé ce patron et je suis tombée amoureuse :

Needles: 3.5 mm Bamboo circulars (Magic loop method)

I used one needle size smaller than recommended because the hat is really for a child a year or two older that Fry. This hat fits him well and should last through to next spring. This pattern is super easy and I really enjoyed making it. Also, the yarn is gorgeous and a joy to knit with, and thank you very much to my friend Mrs B who gave it to my a while back!

J’ai utilisé une taille de moins d’aiguilles que ce qui est recommandé parce que ce bonnet et plutôt pour un enfant qui a un ou deux ans de plus que Fry. Ce bonnet lui va très bien et doit marcher jusqu’au printemps. Le patron est super simple et j’ai bien aimé le faire. En plus, la laine est superbe et très facile à manipuler, donc il faut que je remercie ma copine Mrs B, qui m’a donné la laine cet été !

Hello all! Thank you so much for your kind comments in my last post. I am really excited to finally be able to talk about what I've been working on for so long and to share what I'm doing!

Today I'm starting a new feature here at Suis le fil called WIP Wednesdays. Here I'll show you what I'm working on, whether it's for sale or a personal project. Today I'm working on a new drawstring bag for the Etsy store.

Aujourd’hui je commence une rubrique hebdomadaire ici à Suis le fil qui s’appelle WIP Wednesdays (ou, ce que je fais les mercredis !). Je vous montre ce que je tricote, que ce soit à vendre ou que ce soit un projet personnel. Aujourd’hui je tricote un nouveau sac pour le magasin.

I put these colors together thinking I would have something that brings "jester" to mind, but in the end I think it's simply an interesting combination. Also, you can get a sneak peek of the guts of the bag, or, what's hiding behind the linen lining!

J’ai mis ces couleurs ensemble en pensant que j’aurais quelque chose à la façon du fou du roi, mais en fait je pense que c’est simplement une combinaison plaisante. Aussi on peut voir ce qui est caché par le doublage de lin !

Here is a post I've been wanting to write for a long, long time.

For quite a while now I've dreamed of starting some kind of business, even if it's something small I could do from home. I was inspired the first time my husband took me to the medieval fair at Provins but I only knew I wanted to be involved somehow. It took me several years to figure out how to combine my passions for history and knitting, but I think I've finally done it:

J’étais inspirée la première fois que mon mari m’a emmené à la foire médiévale de Provins, mais je ne savais pas ce que je voulais faire exactement. Enfin après plusieurs années j’ai découvert comment combiner mes passions pour l’histoire et le tricot :

In the coming weeks, I'll be blogging a bit about my designs and what I'm working on. I'm still doing personal projects, just not as quickly as before, so I'll be blogging about those, too. quilt update / nouvelles du patchwork

I've actually had this done for a couple of weeks now, but I've been so busy this week that I haven't had time to take a picture! In case you're wondering, yes, this is the right side; the idea is to let the edges fray, which will make an interesting texture (and should be fun for my son to play with, if I ever get it finished!).

En fait, c’était fini depuis deux semaines déjà, mais j’étais si occupé cette semaine que je n’avais pas le temps de prend une photo ! Et si vous vous demandez, oui, voici le coté droit ; l’idée est de laisser les bouts se détériorer, ce qui va créer une texture intéressante (et doit être amusant pour mon fils, si jamais je le fini !).

It came out quite smaller than I expected, so my next task will be to cut out some more squares and make a large border. Then I'll have to find something for the back. Since my goal is to only use things in the house, I'm thinking either an old sheet or some of Stéphane's old t-shirts that need to be recycled anyway. I'm hoping to have this finished in the next couple of weeks so we can start using it right away!

C’était plus petit que ce que j’attendais, donc mon prochain travail sera de couper plus de carrés pour faire une grande bordure. Après il faut que je trouve quelque chose pour l’arrière. Comme mon but est d’utiliser seulement les choses déjà dans la maison, je pense à un vieux drapeau ou à des vieux t-shirts de Stéphane qui sont prêts d’être recyclés. J’espère le finir dans les prochaines semaines afin qu’il puisse nous servir tout de suite !

my first quilt / ma premier patchwork

I am loving my new sewing machine! So far I've done a lining for a bag (which I can't show you yet because it's a gift) and hemmed a pair of Stéphane's jeans. I'm waiting for some yarn to arrive for my big secret project, so in the meantime I'm playing with my sewing machine some more. I've always wanted a good picnicking blanket, and my blogging friend Clare suggested I make one with old pairs of jeans! Stéphane donated several pairs and my goal is to make this quilt using only materials in the house.

J’adore ma nouvelle machine à coudre ! Déjà j’ai fabriqué une doublure pour un sac à main (qui est un cadeau donc je ne peux pas encore vous montrer) et j’ai fait un ourlet pour une paire de jeans de Stéphane. J’attends l’arrivage de la laine pour commencer mon grand projet secret, donc dans l’intervalle je joue avec ma machine. J’ai toujours eu envie d’une couverture pour faire des pique-niques et ma copine bloggeuse Clare m’a suggéré d’en fabriquer une avec des vieux jeans. Stéphane a donné quelques paires et mon but est de fabriquer ce patchwork en n’utilisant que des matériaux dans la maison.

First I cut out sixty squares using three pairs of jeans and an old pair of cargo pants. Then I took over the baby's play area and laid them out:

En premier, j’ai coupé soixante carrés dans trois paires de jeans et une vieille paire de pantalons kaki. Ensuite, j’ai pris l’endroit où le bébé joue pour les arranger :

I don't really have a place in the house where I can leave the squares out while I work on the quilt, so I took up one row at a time from left to right and then numbered the piles. Then when I work on it, I can move the piles around and I don't have to worry about getting the order mixed up.

Je n’ai pas d’endroit chez moi où je peux les laisser comme ça pendant que je les assemble, donc j’ai pris un rang à la fois de gauche à droite et puis je les ai numérotés. Comme ça, quand je travaille, je peux les déplacer sans souci d’oublier l’ordre.

Now I have to start sewing and I think that's going to take a while! I'll do another update when I have something worth showing...

Et maintenant je dois commencer à coudre et je crois que ça va prendre un peu de temps ! J’écrirai quand j’ai quelque chose d’intéressant à montrer…

Happy birthday to me! / bon anniversaire à moi !

Here is my birthday present to myself (a little early - my birthday is the 23rd). It has been far too long since I had a sewing machine. This is a very simple model but I think it will do all I need it to.

Voici mon cadeau à moi (un peu tôt – mon anniversaire est le 23). Ca fait trop longtemps depuis que j’ai eu une machine à coudre à ma disposition. Celle-ci est un modèle très simple mais je crois qu’elle va faire tout ce que je lui demande.

This past month was very difficult for crafting - our son was very sick and then the three of us took turns with it. I do have a couple of projects to share and I am also working on a huge project that I can't really talk about yet but is keeping me very busy. Very exciting things are going to happen on this blog in the coming months, so stay tuned!

Ce dernier mois a été très difficile pour les loisirs – notre fils était super malade et puis il a partagé sa maladie avec nous. J’ai un ou deux projets à vous montrer et j’ai aussi un grand projet dont je ne peux pas encore trop parler mais qui m’occupe beaucoup de temps. Ce blog va bouger dans les mois qui viennent !

tiny hats / des petits bonnets

Our friends in the South of France had a little girl last weekend. Unfortunately, she arrived far too soon - 28 weeks of gestation. So far, little A is doing well and her mother is recovering. I always feel helpless in these situations and I want to do something to help. If we lived in America I would bake A's father lots of casseroles, but that isn't done here and anyway they live very far away. But there is one thing I can do:

Nos amis dans le sud de la France ont eu une petite fille le week-end dernier. Malheureusement, elle est arrivée beaucoup trop tôt – à 28 SA. Jusqu’à maintenant, la petite A va bien et sa maman récupère. Je me sens toujours impuissante dans ce genre de situations et je veux faire quelque chose pour aider. Si on habitait aux Etats-Unis, je cuisinerais quelques dîners préparés en avance pour le papa, mais on ne fait pas ça ici et de plus ils habitent loin de nous. Mais, il y a quelque chose que je peux faire :

The patterns come from here and here. I just used some yarn in my stash. To give you a sense of scale, the largest hat in the middle has a circumference of 11 inches.

Les patrons viennent d’ici et d’ici. J’ai trouvé les laines dans mes laines de réserve. Pour donner une idée à l’échelle, le bonnet le plus grand au milieu a une circonférence de 28 cm.

I hope these little hats will help keep A warm and will remind her parents that their friends are thinking of them from far away.

J'espère que ces petits bonnets aideront à tenir chaud la petite A et rappelleront à ses parents que leurs amis pensent très fort à eux de loin.

I didn't get to knit as much as I would have liked this week, but I've made a very good start on my new stranded knitting project. Here's the first section:

I'm very glad to report that the front of Stéphane's Beau sweater is off the needles.

Je suis contente de dire que j’ai fini le devant du pull Beau pour Stéphane !

Since I got that milestone behind me, I did another small stranded knitting project. This one went super fast! I think I'm really getting the hang of it and my tension is getting better and better.

Puisque j’ai passé ce cap, j’ai commencé un autre petit projet en Jacquard. Celui-ci a été fabriqué super vite ! Je crois que j’arrive mieux à faire cette technique et la tension de la laine est plus comme il faut.

Pattern: We Call Them Pirates by Adrian Bizilia
Yarn: one skein each of Katia Astral in Black and Natural
Needles Addi Turbo 3.75 40cm and 100cm for finishing in magic loop
Started: 25/03/09

I really, really, really love this yarn! It is incredibly soft and a real pleasure to work with. I'll definitely use it again! I did make a small change: instead of knitting a whole lining, I knit about four rows, did a purl turning row, and then tacked it down as I knit the fifth row in pattern.

Vraiment j’adore cette laine ! Elle est très douce et c'est un plaisir à manipuler. J’en utiliserai encore ! J’ai changé un petit truc du patron : au lieu de tricoter une doublure, j’ai tricoté quatre rangs, puis un rang à l'envers pour tourner, et enfin je l’ai attaché au cinquième rang du patron.

This worked pretty well, though next time I'd probably do a couple of extra rows. As usual, Stéphane wants one for himself so eventually I'll get to try it!

Cette méthode a bien marché, mais la prochaine fois je ferai deux ou trois rangs supplémentaires. Comme d’hab, Stéphane en veut un pour lui-même donc éventuellement j'essayerai !

Moving forward, my next stranded knitting project is already on the needles, as well as the first sleeve of the Beau sweater. I really feel like I'm getting my knitting mojo back!

Continuons : mon prochain projet en Jacquard est déjà sur les aiguilles ainsi que la première manche du pull Beau. J’ai l’impression que j’ai retrouvé mon « mojo » tricot !

first stranded knitting / premier Jacquard

I've wanted to try stranded knitting for ages, but to tell you the truth, I was scared it would be too difficult. The thing is, I have some projects that I would like to create myself that will require this technique, so I was only hurting myself. Finally, thanks again to the helpful videos at knittinghelp.com, I learned how to knit in the continental style so I could hold one strand of yarn in each hand.

Je voulais essayer la technique Jacquard depuis longtemps, mais pour être honnête, j’avais peur qu’elle soit trop difficile. Voici le truc : j’ai quelques idées de projets que je veux créer avec cette technique, et ça ne pourra faire de mal qu'à moi-même. Enfin, encore grâce aux vidéos chez knittinghelp.com, j’ai appris à tricoter à la Continental, ce qui m’a rendue capable de tenir un fil dans chaque main.

Pattern: Flora by Margaux Pena
Yarn: Robin Double Knit in grey and Rowan Kid Classic in Royal
Needles: Addi bamboo 4.0 mm circulars (60 cm for the body and 100 cm at the top in magic loop)

I just wanted something simple to try the technique, so I grabbed some yarn from my stash and found this pattern on Ravelry. The chart was very easy to follow and if I didn't have a four month old baby I could have finished this in a couple of days. The only problem I had was the tension. I knit much more loosely with this technique than I usually do, so the hat came out a bit bigger than expected:

Tout simplement, je voulais un patron facile pour essayer la technique, donc j’ai pris un peu de laine dans ma réserve et j'ai trouvé ce patron sur Ravelry. Le tableau a été très facile à suivre et si je n’avais pas un bébé de quatre mois j’aurais pu finir en quelques jours. Mon seul problème a été l’échantillon. J’ai tricoté beaucoup moins serré avec cette technique que normal, donc le bonnet est plus grand que prévu :

Too bad, I could really use a hat! But I'm determined to continue with this technique so I've already ordered yarn to try out this pattern and this pattern.

Dommage, j’ai besoin d’un bonnet ! Je suis quand même déterminée à continuer cette technique et j’ai déjà commandé de la laine pour faire ce patron et celui-ci aussi.

Wow, it's been a long time since my last post! I'm sorry to say that the desire to work on my projects comes and goes, especially with so little free time these days. I have made a little bit of progress, though:

Dis donc, ça fait longtemps depuis mon dernier poste ! Je suis désolé de dire que le désir de travailler sur mes projets viens et pars, particulièrement avec si peu de temps libre ces derniers jours. J’ai fait un peu de progrès quand même :

This is the front of the Beau sweater. I'm very nearly to the armhole shaping, I think I have about an inch to go.

Voici le devant du pull « Beau ». Je suis presque aux emmanchures, avec encore quelques centimètres à faire.

This is the Nutkin pattern. I've had to go down a needle size to get gauge, which is making the sock a little more dense than I'd like, but it's going well. I'm not in a hurry to finish it; it's nice to have something I can just throw in my purse or work on in the car.

Voici le modèle Nutkin. J’avais besoin de descendre d'une taille les aiguilles pour achever le bon échantillon, qui rend la chaussette plus dense que j’aimerais, mais ça va aller. Je ne me sens pas pressé de la finir. Par contre, c’est sympa d’avoir quelque chose que je peux prendre dans mon sac à main ou même faire dans la voiture.

That's right, I'm learning to spin!

C'est vrai, j'apprends le filage !

Spinning is something I've admired from afar for a very long time, but I thought it was something that was not accessible to me because spinning wheels are so expensive. Then I found out about spindles! They come in a wide range of sizes and prices, which, along with the very inexpensive price of undyed roving, makes learning to spin in this way very affordable.

Le filage est quelque chose que j’ai admiré de loin, depuis longtemps, mais j’ai cru que ce n'était pas quelque chose pour moi parce que les rouets sont si chers. Alors, j’ai découvert les fuseaux ! Ils viennent dans une large gamme de tailles et prix qui, avec le très raisonnable prix de fibres non teintées, rend l'apprentissage du filage très abordable.

From the picture above, it's clear that it's going to take me some time to really get this new skill down pat. This first roving that I'm using is Falkland. The skein on the left is my first attempt, 25 grams and 17 yards. The one on the right is my second attempt, also 25 grams, and came in at 20 yards. The big slubs you see are the ends of the skeins. Since I'm using a large top whorl spindle (an 85 gram Kromski), I'm not sure I can get much thinner, but I'd like continue working on becoming more consistent and not over-twisting.

Sur la photo au-dessus, c’est clair qu’il me faut encore du temps pour améliorer cette compétence. Ces premières fibres sont de Falkland. La pelote à gauche est mon premier essai, qui pèse 25 grammes pour 15,5 mètres. A droite c'est mon deuxième essai, qui lui aussi pèse 25 grammes mais pour 18,3 mètres. Les grandes parties (comment-on traduire « slubs » en français ?) sont les bouts de la pelote. Comme j’utilise un fuseau « top whorl » (un Kromski de 85 g), je ne suis pas sure que je peux la filer plus fine, mais je veux me concentrer sur un filage plus consistant sans tourner trop.

And in case you're wondering what I'll do with these first attempts, watch this space, as eventually I'm going to start yet another project: playing with natural dyes!

Et si vous vous demandez qu’est-ce que je vais faire avec ces premiers essais, il faudra attendre, parce qu’éventuellement je vais commencer encore un nouveau projet : jouer avec les teintures naturelles !

Hooray, the socks are finished!

I finished the first sock the day before French Fry was born and worked on the second sock in the maternity. The one nice thing that came from being so ill and having to stay nine days in the hospital was chatting with the nurses, midwives and other assistants about knitting and the other conversations that started thanks to this sock. For obvious reasons, these socks will always remind me of a very special time.

J’ai fini la première chaussette le jour avant la naissance de French Fry et j’ai travaillé sur la deuxième à la maternité. La seule chose de bien qui me soit arrivée en étant malade et coincée à la maternité pendant neuf jours a été de parler avec les infirmières, les sages femmes et les autres, de tricot. En fait, toutes les conversations ont commencé grâce à cette chaussette. Il est clair que ces chaussettes me rappelleront toujours un temps très spécial.

I have a completely new project that I want to start soon, but first I'm going to put some time into Stéph's sweater, that I haven't even looked at in ages. It would be nice if he could actually wear it before the weather gets too warm!

Last month, Stéph came home from work and asked me if I could knit him some gloves. Then he asked if I could knit him some gloves where the fingertips are free. Then he asked if I could knit him some gloves with free fingertips that have a cover. Okay, okay, I see where this is going! One of his colleagues had a pair of convertible mittens, and lucky for him I had a pattern that I'd been wanting to try.

Le mois dernier, Stéph est rentré du travail et m’a demandé si je pouvais tricoter des gants. Ensuite, il m’a demandé si je pouvais tricoter des gants sans bouts des doigts. Et puis il m’a demandé si je pouvais tricoter des gants sans bouts des doigts avec un couverture des doigts. Oui, d’accord, je savait ce qu’il voulait ! Un des ses collègues a des convertibles mitaines et heureusement j’avais un patron que je voulais essayer :

Needles: 4 mm 100 cm circulars (magic loop method)

The gloves themselves were fine but I had a little trouble with the mitten caps, but they look alright. Unfortunately I was very, very happy to see the end of this project because I. hate. this. yarn.

Aucun problème pour faire les gants, mais j’avais un peu de difficulté à faire les couvertures, finalement ils allaient bien. Malheureusement il faut dire que j’étais bien contente de voir la fin de ce projet parce que je. déteste. cette. laine.

Now, I'm no yarn snob; I have no problems using acrylic yarns. This yarn is 80% acrylic and 20% wool and I still hate it. Maybe it's because of the dry winter weather we've been having but I couldn't knit for even half an hour without my fingers ending up red and irritated. They are nice and comfortable in their finished form but knitting them up was no fun at all!

Ecoutez, je ne suis pas une élitiste de la laine et j’ai aucun soucis à travailler avec les laines acryliques. Cette laine est 80% acrylique et 20% laine et je la déteste quand même. Peut-être parce qu'il fait si sec en ce moment ! Mais je ne pouvais même pas tricoter pendant une demi-heure sans avoir les doigts rouges et irrités. Les gants sont bien confortable tout fini mais les tricoter n’était pas amusant de tout !

Happy New Year! The holidays are drawing to a close, French Fry turned two months old yesterday and I'm finally starting to work on my projects again! But, before we talk about what I'm working on now, let me show you what I made as Christmas gifts.

Bonne année ! Les fêtes sont terminées, French Fry a deux mois déjà et enfin je suis prête à travailler de nouveau sur mes projets ! Mais avant de parler de ce que je fais maintenant, je veux vous montrer ceux que j’ai fait pour Noël.

First up is the Christmas cotton crochet project:

Yarn: Lion Brand Nature's Choice Organic Cotton and Manos del Uruguay Cotton Stria, one skein each, plus two skeins of unmarked yarn
Hook: 4 mm and 4.5 mm

Finished 27/09/08

The yarn was a gift from Mia and is so soft! It was an absolute joy to work with. I got the idea for making these washcloths when we were on vacation in Pas-de-Calais. While visiting a monastery, I saw these handmade soaps for sale and thought they might make nice gifts for our older nieces, who are between 13 and 21 years old. The girls were all surprised that the washcloths were made of cotton and yes, they can actually use them!

La laine est un cadeau de la part de Mia et elle est si douce ! C’était un vrai plaisir de la manipuler. J’avais l’idée de faire ces serviettes de bain quand on était en vacances dans le Pas-de-Calais. En visitant un monastère, j’ai vu ces savons fait à la main en vente et j’ai pensé qu'ils peuvaient faire des cadeaux sympa pour nos nièces, âgées de 13 à 21 ans. Les filles ont été étonnées que les serviettes soient faites en coton, et oui, on peut les utiliser !

I was nervous about this one. Our nephew seems like a fashion-conscious kind of guy, but just because this pattern is so popular in America, would it go over well in France? Well, I'm happy to report that he did actually like it (or at least he said he did!) which made me very happy as well!

As I mentioned before, Stéph liked this one so much, he asked me to make one for him. I wanted to buy another skein of Rowan Pure Wool for him, but he insisted that I use something from the stash. He chose this:

I made both of these hats using the magic loop method. The 100 cm circs were just large enough. I love magic loop but if the circulars aren't long enough it's really not worth the time. I really need to invest in some longer circular needles since it is my favorite method of knitting in the round.

J’ai fait les deux bonnets avec la technique « magic loop ». Les aiguilles circulaires de 100 cm ont été tout juste assez longues. J’adore la technique magic loop mais si les aiguilles ne sont pas assez longues, ce n’est vraiment pas la peine. Il faut que j'investisse dans des aiguilles plus longues comme c’est ma méthode préféré pour tricoter en rond.

Unfortunately, I didn't finish the filet crochet project or the orange cable project. They will both be gifts in the future but now I don't feel so much pressure to finish them. Right now I'm working on something for Stéph that he actually requested. I'll show you that project next time. I hope you all had a great holiday season and happy 2009!

French Fry was born November 2 at 1:18 pm, weighing in at 8 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 inches long. I'm in the process of writing about his birth story on my other blog but long story short - he was born by emergency Cesarean and is in perfect health.

Since I discovered that I can work on Christmas projects and a small side project at the same time, I started a little something for me this week.

Puisque j'ai découvert que je peux fabriquer les projets de Noël et un petit projet à la fois, j'ai commencé un petit quelque chose pour moi cette semaine.

This is the famous Monkey sock pattern by Cookie A. I hesitated doing a pattern that is so popular (over 7000 projects in Ravelry!) but then I discovered why - this pattern really is addictive! It's really quite easy and I'm enjoying this project very much.

Voici le fameux patron de chaussettes Monkey par Cookie A. J’ai hésité à faire un patron aussi populaire (plus que 7000 projets sur Ravelry !), mais maintenant je comprends pourquoi il l'est – c’est vraiment intéressant ! En fait c’est plutôt facile et il me plaît beaucoup.

The yarn is Socks that Rock in the colorway "Rare Gem." It was a gift from my blogging friend Mia. It's funny - this is not a colorway I would have chosen for myself (I'm not really a pink person) but in fact I love the colors and the yarn itself is lovely to work with.

La laine est Socks that Rock en couleur « Rare Gem ». C’était un cadeau de la part de ma copine bloggueuse Mia. C’est marron mais ce n’est pas la couleur que j’aurais choisi pour moi-même (je ne suis pas trop fan du rose) mais je l’adore et la laine est un plaisir à manipuler.

Not too much to report this week. I spent most of my time working on the last two Christmas projects. They are both kind of big so I don't expect to finish them for a while. I've decided, in the meanwhile, to work on smaller projects on the weekends so I can have a little change.

Pas beaucoup à rapporter cette semaine. Pour la plupart du temps j’ai travaillé sur les deux derniers projets de Noël. Ils sont tous les deux grands donc je ne pense pas les finir avant un certain temps. J’ai décidé alors de faire les petits projets les week-ends pour changer un peu.

I seem to be going through a huge cables phase lately. I love cables - they look so complicated but in fact are so simple. In addition to the orange cabled project I've been working on, you might remember the gray cabled project I finished a couple of weeks ago. Well, Stéph liked that one so much that he asked me to make one for him.

Il me semble que je suis folle des torsades en ce moment ! Je les adore – elles semblent être très compliquées, mais en fait elles sont très simples à faire. En plus du projet orange des torsades, peut-être vous rappelez-vous le projet gris des torsades que j’ai fini il y a deux semaines. Stéph l'a aimé tant qu’il m’a demandé d’un faire un pour lui.

two new projects / deux nouveaux projets

I'm really pleased with what I got done this week, as I did exactly what I set out to do (for a change!). I started my last Christmas project, which I can't share too much about but can give you a taste:

Je suis bien contente avec de ce que j’ai fait cette semaine parce que j’ai fait exactement ce que je voulais (pour changer !). J’ai commencé mon dernier cadeau de Noël, lequel je ne peux pas trop partager mais je peux vous donner un petit d'avant gout :

This yarn was purchased with someone in particular in mind and I've been searching for the right pattern for over a year. I finally found it last week and I'm hoping to get it done in time to send it off for Christmas. The knitting won't take too long but there is a lot of finishing involved. I may need to find some help from someone that sews, in fact, if you know anyone!

Cette laine a été achetée exprès pour quelqu’un et j’ai cherché pendant un an le modèle le plus juste. Je l’ai enfin trouvé la semaine dernière et j’espère la finir à temps pour l’envoyer à Noël. Le tricot ne va pas prendre longtemps mais il y a beaucoup des choses à faire après pour le finir. Je pourrais avoir besoin l'aide de quelqu’un qui sais coudre.

I also made one last thing for French Fry before he arrives. My friend Doc gave us a lot of clothes for French Fry, including a very cute red sweater and red booties. I just happened to have a skein of red yarn that matches the sweater exactly, so I made a hat.

J’ai aussi tricoté une dernière chose pour French Fry avant qu’il arrive. Ma copine Doc nous a donné beaucoup de vêtements pour French Fry, dont un mignon gilet rouge et des chaussons rouges. Par hasard, j’avais une pelote de laine rouge qui est de la même couleur que le gilet, donc j’ai fabriqué un bonnet.

I love this pattern for making baby hats! Thanks to the ribbing, it's small enough for a newborn, but it's long enough and stretchy enough to wear for a couple of seasons.

J’adore ce patron pour faire les bonnets ! Grace aux côtes, c’est assez petit pour un nouveau né, mais assez long et extensible pour le porter pendant une saison ou deux.

I didn't like the idea of making a lot of clothes for French Fry for this winter, as he'll be growing so fast that he wouldn't wear them for very long, so I'm happy to have made at least one thing that will last a little while! I also hadn't bought a special "going home" outfit for him (I don't know if this is done in other countries but it's very popular in the States) so I'm happy we have a nice little ensemble for him to wear when he comes home.

Je n’ai pas aimé trop l’idée de fabriquer beaucoup de vêtements pour French Fry pour cet hiver, comme il va grandir vite et qu’il ne les portera pas longtemps. Je suis heureuse d'avoir fait au moins une chose qu’il peut porter pour un peu de temps ! En plus, je n’ai rien acheté de spécial pour sortir de la maternité (aux E-U on achète des vêtements pour « rentrer à la maison » ; est-ce qu'on le fait aussi ici ?) donc je suis contente d’avoir un bel ensemble qu’il peut porter quand on rentre à la maison.

a frustrating week / une semaine frustrante

This week was much busier than I expected! Doctor's appointments and lots of errand running kept me moving (maybe a little bit more than I should have, as I'm still feeling a little bad) and left me with little time for crafting. Even when I was crafting I found myself making loads of mistakes. For example, here is what my first knitted lace project looks like right now:

Les rendez-vous chez les médecins et plusieurs commissions m’ont fait bouger (et peut-être un peu plus que raisonnable parce que je ne vais pas terrible en ce moment) et ne m’ont pas laissé beaucoup de temps pour tricoter. Même quand j’ai tricoté j’ai fait beaucoup de bêtises ! Par exemple, voici mon tout premier projet en dentelle :

It started fine. I had about two inches done and then I decided that it would probably look better on smaller needles, so I frogged and started over. I don't know what happened after that - I started making silly mistakes, or I stopped in the middle of a row and couldn't find my place again, or I wasn't concentrating. Whatever it was, I had to frog two more times and I finally had to set it aside before I threw it out the window! This was going to be a Christmas present for my sister, but since it's meant to be for summer anyway, she suggested making it for her birthday in June instead.

Tout a bien commencé. J’ai fait près de 5 cm avant que j’ai décidé qu’il serait mieux de le faire sur des aiguilles plus petites, donc j’ai recommencé. Et puis je ne sais pas ce qu'il s’est passé – j’ai fait des erreurs idiotes, ou je me suis arrêté au milieu d’un rang et perdu ma maille, ou encore je n’étais pas bien concentrée. Qu'importe, j’ai du recommencer encore deux fois et enfin je l’ai mis de coté pour eviter de le jeter par la fenêtre ! Le projet était pour le Noël de ma soeur mais comme c'est pour l'été, elle m’a dit de laisser tomber jusqu’à son anniversaire en juin.

I do have some good news, however!

Par contre, j'ai des bonnes nouvelles !

The back for Stéph's Beau sweater is done! Because it is one of those projects that you can sort of do on auto-pilot, I'm setting it aside for a few weeks. I think after French Fry arrives I'll be happy for a project where I don't have to think too much.

Le dos pour le Beau pull de Stéph est fini ! Parce que c’est un projet qui n’est pas très difficile, je le mis de coté pour quelques semaines. Je crois que quand French Fry arrivera je serai contente d’avoir un projet qui ne nécessite pas beaucoup de réflexion.

I've reached the point in my pregnancy (34 weeks) where I don't move around as much as I used to. I haven't been spending nearly as much time online as I usually do and I'm slower and slower in getting things done around the house (which is why this update is so very late!). The exception is that I've been getting loads of crafting projects done! Some days I forget my own name but I have so many ideas for projects right now that it's kind of freaking me out.

Je suis au moment de ma grossesse (34 semaines) où je ne bouge pas autant qu'avant. Je ne passe pas autant de temps sur l’ordinateur et je suis de plus en plus lente à faire le ménage et tout ce qu’il faut dans la maison (et c’est pour ça que je suis en retard ici !). La seule exception est que je fais beaucoup de tricot et de crochet ! Il y a des jours où j’oublie mon propre nom mais j’ai des centaines d'idées en ce moment et ça me donne un peu peur !

I've been on a real crochet kick lately, but this may have more to do with how fast crochet is than having a preference for it over knitting. First up, I finally finished my bib project:

This next one was done relatively quickly, done in just a few days, and was made with some organic cotton that was sent to me by my dear blogging friend Mia at Knit & Play with Fire.

Mes deux autres projets sont des cadeaux pour Noël donc je ne peux pas vous les montrer entièrement. Mais, je peux vous laisser jeter un œil ! Celui-ci a été fait relativement vite, en quelques jours seulement, et réalisé en coton bio. Le laine m'a été envoyé par ma copine Mia à Knit & Play with Fire.

The last project is something of a dream come true. The real reason I wanted to learn to crochet was because I was interested in doing fine lace work. I kind of discovered filet crochet by accident and I completely fell in love. My first piece is pretty basic, but I did design it by myself and I think it's going to be nice when it's finished. Here's a sneak peek:

Ce dernier projet est comme un rêve réalisé. La vrai raison pour laquelle je voulais apprendre le crochet était parce que ce j'étais intéressée par la dentelle. J’ai découvert le « filet crochet » (est-ce la même chose en français ?) par hasard et je suis tombée amoureuse. Ma première pièce est très basique, mais j’ai crée le modèle moi-même et je pense qu’elle sera jolie quand elle sera fini. Voici un coup d’œil :

French Fry's socks / les chaussettes de French Fry

Another week, another FO!

Une semaine, un projet fini !

I knew the stripes would never match like the other pair of socks, so I decided to do the cabled pattern from the same instructions so they would look like they go together. If I made them again I would do them a little different - I would definitely leave out a repeat on the leg and maybe even on the foot. Don't they seem a little long? Also, I didn't notice until I'd finished one that I probably should have just done stockinette stitch for the bottom of the foot, but in the end it doesn't matter as I don't think he'll be walking at three months anyway!

Je savais que les couleurs ne seraient pas identiques comme l’autre paire de chaussettes, donc j’ai décidé de faire le modèle en torsade qui vient du même patron. Comme ça, les chaussettes se ressemblent, au moins ! Si je pouvais les refaire, je les ferais différement – par exemple, je laisserais tomber une répétition sur la jambe et peut-être sur le pied. Ne semblent-elles pas un peu longue ? En plus, je n'avais remarqué jusqu'au moment d'en finir une que ce serait mieux de faire la semelle en point de jersey, mais bon, je ne crois pas que le bébé va marcher à trois mois quand même !

I am really happy with how this came out. I crocheted the squares together with a simple slip stitch and did the border in half-double crochet.

Je suis bien contente du résultat. J'ai crocheté les grannys ensemble tout simplement avec les mailles glissés et j'ai fait la bordure en demi bride.

I think it will be a great size for using in the car, the stroller, or just around the house. The best part is that this project has given me the confidence to continue in crochet and try different techniques. I think I can say now that I am a knitter and a crocheter!

Je crois qu'elle sera d'une bonne taille pour la voiture, la poussette, ou même à la maison. La meilleure chose est que ce projet m'a donné la confiance pour continuer à crocheter et essayer les différentes techniques. Je pense que je peux dire maintenant que je suis tricoteuse et crocheteuse !

a doll for Lucie / une poupée pour Lucie

Lucie is the daughter of friends of ours that live in Grenoble, in southern France. Lucie's parents didn't divulge her gender until she was born in February, so I have a little bit of excuse for being a little late in presenting her with a gift, but even then six months is pushing it a bit, don't you think? I'm a little embarrassed that it was so late.

Lucie est la fille de nos amis qui vivent à Grenoble. Les parents de Lucie n’ont pas dit si c'était une fille ou un garçon jusqu'à sa naissance en février. Donc j’ai une petite excuse pour avoir été en retard avec son cadeau, mais peut-être que six mois après c'est quand même trop long, n’est-ce pas ? Je suis bien embarrassé d'avoir été si en retard.

Then again, I am pretty happy about what I ended up making for Lucie. Once again inspired by the thousands of projects on Ravelry, I ended up with a doll, but not just any doll: since Lucie's Mom was a ballerina, I knew exactly what kind of doll it had to be.

Même si j'étais en retard, je suis bien fière de ce que j’ai fait pour Lucie. Encore inspirée par les milles des projets sur Ravelry, j’ai choisi une poupée, mais pas seulement une poupée : puisque la maman de Lucie était ballerine, je savais exactement quel genre de poupée il fallait.

The only changes I made were to the color combinations. I gave her pink shoes in hopes that they would resemble point shoes and some bloomers (as ballerina dresses are quite short, aren't they?).

The dress I designed myself with my newly acquired crochet skills and the help of The Crochet Stitch Bible (Ravelry link). With the help of a ribbon to close it in the back, the dress can be removed so the doll can wear other clothes.

J’ai créée la robe moi-même avec mes nouvelles connaissances en crochet et l’aide de The Crochet Stitch Bible (lien Ravelry). Grace au ruban derrière la robe, elle peut se déshabiller et puis porter des autres vêtements.

I received a nice email from Lucie's Mom to let me know that they received the doll and that they liked it, which made me so happy! I think that's why most of my projects end up being gifts - it's such a pleasure to know that someone is enjoying something you've made.

J’ai reçu un email sympa de la part de la Maman de Lucie pour dire que la poupée a été bien reçue et qu’elle leur a plu, ce qui m’a rendue très heureuse ! Je crois que c’est pour ça que la plupart de mes projets finissent comme cadeaux – c’est un vrai plaisir de savoir que quelqu’un aime quelque chose qu’on fait par main.

I wasn't even trying to make them the same; it just so happens that I hit the colors in a place where they repeat quickly. I'm sure the next two socks won't be identical (but that's what I said before so we'll have to wait and see!).

Je n’ai pas fait exprès ; j’ai eu la chance de tomber sur le bon point où les couleurs se sont répétées très vite. Je suis sûre que la prochaine paire ne sera pas identique (mais c’est ce que j’ai dit la première fois donc on verra bien !).

The other thing I wanted to show you is the granny square in blue that will go with the granny squares in green for my "Dreamweaver blanket."

L’autre chose que je voulais vous montrer est le granny bleu qui va avec les grannys verts pour ma couverture Dreamweaver.

This yarn was given to me by a friend and it seems natural that they should go together. They are going to make a great blanket, I think. I only have two more squares to make and then I can start crocheting them together. It will be really nice to have an FO so I may go ahead and do that this weekend!

Ces laines étaient un cadeau d’une amie et c’est naturel qu’elles vont ensemble. Elles vont faire une jolie couverture, je crois. Je n’ai plus que deux grannys à faire et puis je peux commencer à les attacher. Il sera sympa d’avoir un projet fini donc c’est possible que je le fasse ce week-end !

Also, I have one more bib to make and then I just have to sew the buttons on the bibs that don't have buttons yet (that would be most of them). After that I'll be ready for a new crochet project but I haven't decided what I'd like to do yet. I'd like to try working with a smaller thread so I may just jump in with these lovely fan bookmarks (the free pattern can be found here).

En plus, je n’ai plus qu'un bavoir à crocheter et puis je peux ajouter les boutons à ceux qui n’en ont pas encore (la plupart). Après ça, je serai prête pour un nouveau projet à crocheter mais je n’ai pas encore décidé ce que je veux faire. Je voudrais essayer un fil plus fin donc je suis tentée par ces jolis marque-pages (le modèle gratuit se trouve ici.)

Also this week we're going to start moving around furniture to start changing our office into a nursery for French Fry, and since the new furniture we've ordered hasn't even come in yet, this is going to be a project that may take a long while since Stéph goes back to work on Monday and we'll only have the weekends to put together furniture and move things around. It's going to get messy but happily I'll have my projects to keep me from stressing out. I hope you all have a great week!

Cette semaine, on va commencer à changer notre bureau en chambre de bébé pour French Fry. Puisque les nouveaux meubles ne sont pas encore arrivés, ce projet peux prendre un peu de temps car Stéph rentre à l’école à partir de lundi, donc on n'aura que les week-ends pour tout faire. It's the strangest thing: I increased the number of projects in my rotation to four and now I'm knitting and crocheting faster than ever! Right now I'm working on two knitting and two crochet projects and alternating disciplines as I go. The bibs and the granny squares are coming along nicely. Here are the two knitting projects that are new:

C’est bizarre : j’ai augmenté le nombre de projets tournant avec quatre et maintenant je tricote et crochète plus vite que jamais ! Dans la rotation j’ai deux projets de tricot et deux projets de crochet, et j’alterne entre les deux disciplines à chaque fois. Les bavoirs et les grannys vont très bien. Voici les nouveaux projets de tricot :

I'm making a new sweater for Stéph. We looked for a pattern together and it didn't take long to find one we could agree on: Beau by Kim Hargreaves. We liked it so much, we bought the book on Amazon: Vintage Knits by Rowan. Here is my progress so far:

Je fabrique un nouveau pull pour Stéph. On a cherché ensemble un modèle et on n’a pas mis longtemps avant d'en trouver un qui ait plu à nous deux : Beau par Kim Hargreaves (lien de Ravelry). This is about a skein and a half in. My plan was to do one skein per rotation but this second skein seems to be going slower and slower. I think I'll give it one more day before moving on.

Ca représente une pelote et demi de travail. Mon plan était de faire une pelote par rotation mais j’avance de plus en plus lentement avec la deuxième pelote. Peut-être que je continuerais un jour de plus avant de commencer le prochain projet dans la rotation.

The other knitting project is some baby socks for French Fry. I'm using some yarn left over from a pair of socks I made for my sister earlier in the year. I've read that knitted socks are better for babies (rather than booties) because they stay on better, but since these are sized zero to three months I don't know if it makes a difference.

L’autre projet c'est des chaussettes pour French Fry. J’utilise le reste de la laine dont je me suis servie afin de fabriquer une paire de chaussettes pour ma sœur cette année. J’ai lu que les chaussettes tricoté sont mieux que les chaussons tricoté pour les bébés parce que ils restent sur les pieds. Pourtant, mes chaussettes sont pour zéro à trois mois, donc je ne sais pas si ça fait une grande différence.

Sorry, the picture is really awful - I left it to the last minute to photograph it! The dice are there to show the size - they are so tiny, I can't believe a foot is going to fit in that thing! I know I could find the beginning of the same repeat to make a matching sock, but if I don't I can make four socks instead of two. I think it will be fun to have four socks that I can mix and match!

Désolé, la photo est vraiment pas terrible – j'ai attendu la dernière minute pour la faire. Les dés sont là pour faire une comparaison de taille – elles sont si petite que je n’arrive pas à croire qu'il aura les petits pieds pour aller dedans ! Je sais que je peux trouver le début de la série des bandes pour faire une chaussette pareille, mais si je ne le fais pas, je peux fabriquer quatre chaussettes plutôt que deux. Je pense que ça sera amusant d’avoir quatre chaussettes dont je peux choisir une paire !

the gift of cross stitch / un cadeau de point de croix

I have been very lucky to have made some very good friends in the blogging community since I've moved to France. One of them is Aimee, who was my guide in learning how to knit. A few months ago, Aimee realized her dream of opening a teahouse, called L'Oisive Thé, in the 13th arrondissement in Paris. I can't say enough good things about her tea shop - I always stop in whenever I visit Paris and I think she easily has the best salads in all of Paris (and her homemade cookies are to die for!).

J’ai eu la chance de rencontrer des très bonnes amies dans le monde des blogs depuis que je suis arrivée en France. Une de ces amies est Aimee, qui était ma guide quand j’ai appris à tricoter. Il y a quelques mois, Aimee a réalisé son rêve d’ouvrir un salon de thé, qui s’appelle L’Oisive Thé et qui se trouve dans le treizième arrondissement à Paris. J’adore son salon de thé - j’y vais chaque fois que je me trouve à Paris et je pense qu’elle a les meilleures salades de tout Paris (et ses cookies fait maison sont sans pareil !).

Not long after she opened her doors, she asked me if I'd make a little something for the teahouse. One of the great features of L'Oisive Thé is that there are always interesting books, magazines and newspapers to read while you're there. Aimee asked me to put together a little cross stitch to let folks know that they are welcome to read while they sip. Here's what I came up with:

Pas longtemps après qu'elle a ouvert ses portes, elle m’a demandé si je voulais faire un petit quelque chose pour le salon de thé. Une des choses charmante de L’Oisive Thé est qu’il y a toujours des livres intéressants, des magazines ou des journaux à lire sur place. Aimee m’a demandé de faire un petit point de croix afin que les gens savent qu’ils ont le droit de lire quand ils boivent. Voici ce que j’ai fait :

The pattern for the text came from this free Celtic text cross stitch pattern generator, but I seem to have misplaced the link where I found the border, sorry! In any case, I quite like the effect of the metallic thread but it sure is a pain to work with!

Les paroles pour le texte viennent de générateur de paroles gratuites de textes Celtiques, mais j’ai perdu le lien pour la bordure, désolé ! En tous cas, j’aime bien l’effet du fil métallique mais c’est très difficile à manipuler !

In the end, I sent it off to Aimee without signing it! Whoops! Luckily I'll be seeing her this weekend so I'll have to bring a needle and some thread along. L'Oisive Thé is closed until the end of August as they renovate the kitchen and update the decorations, but if you find yourself in Paris this fall and longing for a cup of tea, be sure to visit Aimee and tell her Vivi sent you!

Finalement, je l’ai envoyé à Aimee sans signature ! Zut ! Heureusement, je vais la voir ce week-end, donc je dois me rappeller d’amener une aiguille et du fil. L’Oisive Thé est fermé jusqu'à la fin août, car ils sont en train de rénover la cuisine et les décorations, mais si vous vous trouvez à Paris cet automne et que vous avez soif d'une tasse de thé, allez voir Aimee et dites lui que Vivi a vous envoyé !

A busy week / une semaine bien chargée

I absolutely exceeded my expectations this week! I crocheted not one but two more granny squares, putting me halfway through the project, but also, look!

I also started swatching for a new sweater for Stéph, but was dismayed to find that I don't have any 5.5mm needles - not even circular ones! I'm waiting for my new Addi Turbos to get here so I can keep swatching. I have a feeling that the sweater is going to come in handy when I just want to zone out in front of the tv for some mindless knitting.

En plus, j'ai commencé à tester mes aiguilles pour faire un nouveau pull à Stéph (question technique pour les françaises - comment dit-on "swatching" en français ?), mais j'ai été étonné de découvrir que je n'avais pas d'aiguilles en taille de 5,5 mm - même pas en circulaire ! J'attends que mes nouvelles Addi Turbos arrivent pour continuer. J'ai le sentiment que la fabrication de ce nouveau pull sera très pratique pendant les moments où je veux me reposer devant le télé.

This week won't be nearly as successful, unfortunatly, since I have a ton of non-crafting things to do. It's too bad, I was really on a roll! That's alright, even if I don't do anything, I have another project I can share with you next week that is neither knitting nor crocheting related. Have a great week!

We had a lovely week in Pas-de-Calais, as always. I've written about most of the highlights on my other blog, but of course I have to highlight what crafty things I did here at Suis le fil!

On a passé une belle semaine dans le Pas-de-Calais, comme d'habitude. J'ai écrit toutes nos aventures sur mon autre blog, mais bien sur, ici, il faut écrire des projets travaillé sur Suis le fil !

Here is my one crafting in action shot: while Stéph and my FIL fished for trout, I enjoyed the gorgeous weather with a hook of a different sort:

All in all, I did pretty well; one more granny square, two bibs, and while I didn't finish that blasted sock, I did get past the gusset so I can say I'm in the home stretch!

Finalement, je suis contente du nombre de projets que j'ai fait cette semaine : un granny de plus, deux bavoirs de plus, et même si je n'ai pas fini la chaussette, j'ai bien passé le talon et c'est presque fini !

I'm not home this week, as we are currently vacationing in the northern region of Pas-de-Calais, where my in-laws grew up. This week we'll be doing some trout fishing, open-air market shopping, beach combing, and I'll be crafting, of course! I'm hoping to finish my famous second sock and crochet a few bibs and granny squares while we're gone.

Je ne suis pas chez moi cette semaine car nous sommes en vacances dans le Pas-de-Calais, où mes beaux parents ont grandi. Cette semaine, on pêche à la truite, on fait les courses aux marché, on se balade sur la plage et je fais mon tricot et mon crochet, bien sûr ! J'espère finir la fameuse deuxième chaussette et crocheter quelques bavoirs et grannys alors que nous sommes partis.

my second crochet project / mon deuxième projet de crochet

When I finally decided that I wanted to learn how to crochet, there were two very different styles of projects I was interested in learning how to do. One is amigurumi, or Japanese-style crocheted toys, and the other is the delicate art of openwork, such as making doilies.

Quand j'ai finalement décidé que je voulais apprendre à crocheter, il y avait deux styles de crochet très différents qui m'intéressais. L'un est l'amigurumi, ou des jouets crochetés à la japonaise, et l'autre est l'art délicat "d'openwork" (travail ouvert ?), comme les napperons.

While I have a link to my mother (who passed away in May 2005) through crochet, I have another link to my father's grandmother through crochet, also. When she died, my father inherited quite a few pieces of linen (lace, tablecloths, etc.), but unfortunately they were stored away and forgotten until both my parents passed away. I brought most of these pieces home with me and among them I found this doily which seems to have been made by my great-grandmother. For me, it's a special family heirloom and I display it among our wedding photos.

Maintenant j'ai un lien avec ma mère (qui est décédée en mai 2005) avec le crochet, j'ai un autre lien avec la grand-mère de mon père avec le crochet aussi. Quand elle est décédée, mon père a hérité de quelques pièces de lingerie (de la dentelle, des nappes, etc ...), mais malheureusement ils ont été rangés et puis oubliés jusqu'à ce que mes parents décèdent. J'ai ramené la plupart de ces pièces chez moi et parmi celles-ci j'ai trouvé ce napperon qui, je pense, a été fait par mon arrière grand-mère. Pour moi, c'est un héritage spécial de famille et il est bien placé avec nos photos de mariage.

I knew it wouldn't be a good idea to jump straight into crocheting with tiny thread and hooks, so I asked my friend Doc, who is a long time crocheter, how to best work my way up (or down) to this fine work. She suggested starting with granny squares, which use the same principle but on a larger scale.

Je savais que ce ne serait pas une bonne idée de se lancer directement dans le crochet avec du fil fin et des petits crochets. Donc j'ai demandé à ma copine Doc, qui crochete depuis longtemps, quelle est la meilleure façon d'arriver à travailler avec le fin. Elle a suggéré de commencer avec les granny squares, qui utilisent le même principe mais sur une échelle plus grande.

Thanks to Ravelry, I was able to look at loads of different granny squares. The one that caught my eye is called Dream Catcher. What really sold it for me was Ravelry user bjclark63's Dreamcatcher blanket. I figured that not only would it be a great way to learn granny squares, but I would end up with another project for French Fry at the end.

Grace à Ravelry, je pouvais chercher beaucoup de différents granny squares. L'un qui m'a tapé dans oeil est appelé Dream Catcher. Je savais qu'il était fait pour moi après avoir trouvé la couverture Dreamcatcher de bjclark63. J'ai pensé que ça serait une bonne méthode pour apprendre à faire les granny squares, et puis je finirais avec encore un projet pour French Fry.

They are supposed to come out at 12" each but since I'm using a hook one size smaller, mine are coming out at 10". Just like with my crocheted bibs, it's so nice I've done it twice:

I think I've finally found a good balance between working on my knitting projects and my new and exciting crochet projects. Since I'm rotating between four projects, progress will be kind of slow for the moment but I'm really enjoying switching back and forth between knitting and crocheting!

Je pense que j'ai enfin trouvé un bon équilibre entre travailler sur les projets de tricot et mes nouveaux et excitants projets de crochet. Parce que j'alterne entre quatre projets, leurs progrès seront lents, mais pour le moment je me plais à changer entre le tricot et le crochet !

fighting second sock syndrome / la lutte contre le syndrome de la deuxième chaussette

One of the knitting UFOs that has been languishing around the house for many months is a pair of Jaywalker socks (Ravel it!). I have a long and sordid history with this pattern but I think I've just about conquered it. Now the problem is fighting against Second Sock Syndrome.

Un des projets pas encore fini que j'ai laissé en plan ces derniers mois est une paire de chaussettes Jaywalker (Ravel-le !). J'ai une longue histoire avec ce patron, mais je pense que je l'ai finalement vaincu. Maintenant, le problème est la lutte contre le Syndrome de la Deuxième Chaussette.

The first time I tried to make these socks, I used some mystery yarn I found at an outlet shop in Paris. Without any information on the yarn at all, I attempted to start a sock on recommended sized needles but I didn't get very far. I then tried to get gauge on two different sizes and got so frustrated that I ended up simply throwing the yarn in the bottom of a bag and swore off the pattern entirely.

La première fois que j'ai essayé de tricoter ces chaussettes, j'ai utilisé une laine mystérieuse que j'ai trouvée dans un magasin usine à Paris. Sans aucune information sur la laine, j'ai commencé à faire une chaussette avec les aiguilles de la taille recommandée, mais je n'ai pas réussi. Alors, j'ai essayé encore avec deux tailles d'aiguilles en plus et finalement je suis devenue si frustrée que j'ai jeté la laine au fond d'un sac et j'ai juré de ne jamais y retoucher.

Not long after, a friend of mine suggested trying the magic loop method of knitting socks (knittinghelp.com has a great video tutorial on their Advanced Knitting Techniques page). She praised it so highly that I picked up some different yarn and a long 2.5mm long circular needle I happened to have on hand and tried again.

Peu de temps après, une copine m'a recommandé la méthode "magic loop" (loop magique ?) pour tricoter les chaussettes (et il y a un cours formidable en vidéo sur la page "Advanced Knitting Techniques" de knittinghelp.com). Elle l'a si bien recommandée que j'ai pris une nouvelle laine et de longues aiguilles circulaires en taille 2,5 mm et que j'ai réessayé.

Much to my delight I really, really enjoy this method! Since the pattern is not written specifically for magic loop, things got a little tricky around the heel but I pushed through and eventually finished my first Jaywalker sock. I pushed myself to at least start the second sock in a vain attempt to avoid SSS but I didn't get very far past the ribbed cuff and the project got set aside.

Je suis très heureuse de dire que j'aime bien cette méthode ! Du fait que le patron n'est pas écrit spécifiquement pour le magic loop, je l'ai trouvé un peu difficile au talon mais je me suis poussée un peu et j'ai fini ma première chaussette Jaywalker. Je me suis pousseé encore un peu plus pour commencer la deuxième chaussette dans un effort vain d'éviter le SDC, mais je n'avais pas tricoté plus que ça avant de laisser tomber.

Since I've been working non-knitting projects the last couple of months, I was actually kind of afraid that I'd forgotten how to knit! Saturday night I picked the sock back up and was relieved to know that it all came back to me very quickly, even the pattern itself which is easy to memorize.

Comme j'ai travaillé sur des projets autre que le tricot ces derniers mois, j'avais un peu de peur d'avoir oublié comment tricoter ! Samedi soir dernier j'ai recommencé la chaussette et je suis soulagée de trouver que tout est revenu très vite, même le patron qui est très facile à mémoriser.

I'm determined to do at least a few rows a day on this sock even if I can't convince myself to sit down and really knock it out. I want to push myself through it so I can move on to other things and I'd also really like to use the remains of the skeins to make some booties or socks for French Fry before he gets here!

Je suis déterminée à faire au moins quelques rangs par jour sur la chaussette même si je ne peux pas me convaincre de faire tout d'un coup. Je veux me pousser pour finir afin de pouvoir faire d'autres choses, et en plus, je voudrais utiliser les restes des pelotes pour faire des chaussons ou des chaussettes pour French Fry avant sa naissance !

first steps into crochet / les premiers pas dans le crochet

I've been wanting to learn how to crochet for some time now. Not only was it my mother's favorite craft, but there are plenty of knitting patterns that call for crochet as finishing techniques. But I had two problems - I kept putting off learning until I completed my unfinished knitting projects and I couldn't decide what project to start with. When I realized that I would never have a real break between knitting projects (I salute those knitters that don't have at least two or three UFOs laying around) I started combing through Ravelry's pattern archive.

Je voulais apprendre le crochet depuis un certain temps, pas seulement parce qu'il était le loisir préféré de ma mère mais aussi parce qu'il y a pas mal de patrons de tricot qui nécessitent le crochet pour finir un projet. Cependant, j'avais deux problèmes - je me suis dit que je l'apprendrai quand j'aurai une pause entre les projets de tricot et aussi j'avais du mal à choisir mon premier projet de crochet. Finalement, j'ai réalisé que je n'aurai jamais une vraie pause entre les projets de tricot (et je salue les tricoteuses qui n'ont pas deux ou trois projets pas fini chez eux) donc j'ai commencé à sérieusement chercher un projet dans les archives des modèles sur Ravelry.

Really, I can't say enough good things about Ravelry. Not only is it a great way to keep track of your projects, books, stash and accessories, but there is a thriving and always-growing community in the forums (and there is a substantial French community as well!). My favorite feature is the huge pattern archive that allows you to browse in dozens of different ways.

Vraiment, je ne peux pas dire assez de bien de Ravelry. C'est une façon parfaite de se tenir informé des projets, des livres, des laines et des accessoires, mais il y a aussi une communauté bien vivante dans les forums (et une communauté française en plus !). Mais ma partie préférée du site sont les énormes archives des patrons qui vous permettent de chercher des patrons de douzaines de manières différentes.

The first thing I was inspired to make were bibs for French Fry. I had a few skeins of Sugar'n Cream cotton yarn that I had planned to make some dishcloths with, but decided that bibs would be more fun and would probably last longer. My very first crochet project ended up being the Basic Bib by Priscilla Hewitt (Ravel it!). It started off a bit tight and I found it hard in the beginning to find the beginning and ends of rows, but at least it looks like what it's supposed to be:

La première chose que j'ai choisie de faire était des bavoirs pour French Fry. J'avais quelques pelotes de Sugar'n Cream laine en coton avec lesquelles je voulais fabriquer des torchons à vaisselle, mais je décidé que les bavoirs seraient plus amusants et j'ai pensé qu'ils dureraient plus longtemps. Mon premier projet en crochet était le "Basic Bib" par Priscilla Hewitt (Ravel-le !). J'ai commencé un peu serré et ce fut difficile au début de trouver les bouts des rangs, mais au moins il rassemble à un bavoir :

The next bib I tried was the Crochet Baby Bib by Lily (makers of Sugar'n Cream cotton yarn) (Ravel it!). This one went a lot more smoothly. I'm not a big fan of the ruffled edges, especially since I made it for my son (yes it still feels weird to say that!), so I replaced the edges with two rounds of single crochet.

Le bavoir suivant était le "Crochet Baby Bib" par Lily (le fabriquant de Sugar'n Cream laine en coton) (Ravel-le !). Cette fois-ci, je me suis débrouillée beaucoup plus facilement. Je ne suis pas trop fan de la bordure en dentelle, particulièrement parce qu'il est pour mon fils (et oui, il est toujours bizarre de dire ça !), donc j'ai remplacé la bordure du patron par deux ronds de maille serrée.

I liked this one so much that I've already made another one and I'm planning on making a whole set for French Fry!

J'aime tellement ce patron que j'ai déjà fabriqué un autre et je suis en route pour faire une série complète pour French Fry !

The best part is that my sister just sent me another six skeins for my birthday, so I should have plenty of bibs ready by the time French Fry arrives!

Bonus - ma soeur m'a envoyé encore six pelotes de Sugar'n Cream pour mon anniversaire, donc j'aurai pas mal de bavoirs avant l'arrivée de French Fry!

So I think I'm well on the crochet path! Now if only I can talk myself into finishing up my knitting UFOs...

a note about translations / une astuce sur les traductions

While we're still relatively at the beginning of this blog's life, I thought I might make a brief comment about the translations. For now, the method of writing each post starts with my writing everything in English first, so I can be sure that I say everything I want to say in my mother tongue. Then I make a first pass at the French, using my reference books and limited use of translation websites. Finally, my husband, a native French speaker, reviews and corrects my French.

However, he's not familiar with some vocabulary, such as is used for knitting, crochet and cross stitch, so you may find some mistakes in that sense. If you're familiar with these terms in French and you see a mistake here, I'd love to hear from you so I can improve my French in these areas as well.

Comme nous sommes toujours au début de ce blog, je voudrais faire une petite remarque sur les traductions. Actuellement, ma méthode pour écrire chaque poste commence par une écriture en anglais, ainsi, je suis certaine d'exprimer tous ce que je veux dire dans ma langue maternelle. Alors, je fais un premier essai en français, en utilisant mes livres de référence et un usage limité des sites de traductions. Pour finir, mon mari, un francophone natif, corrige rapidement ma grammaire et mon orthographe.

Cependant, il ne connaît pas tous le vocabulaire utilisé pour le tricot, crochet, ou point de croix. Donc, il est bien possible qu'il reste des fautes de ce côté. Si vous connaissez bien ces termes en français et que vous voyez une faute, n'hésitez pas à me la signaler, ce qui en plus me permet d'améliorer mon français.

the best teddy bear ever / le meilleur nounours du monde

Last year, I received a surprise birthday present in the mail. One of my blog friends noticed that I had an Amazon wish list on my other blog and sent me a couple of knitting books. One was Vogue Knitting, which is widely regarded as THE knitting bible, and Simply Baby by Debbie Bliss. When asked how I could repay her kindness, she replied that I could make something for her son, who was due in October of last year.

L'année dernière, j'ai reçu un cadeau inattendu pour mon anniversaire par la poste. Une copine bloggueuse a remarqué que j'avais une liste cadeaux de Amazon sur mon autre blog et m'a envoyé deux livres de tricot. L'un est Vogue Knitting, que les anglophones pensent être la 'Bible du tricot', et l'autre estSimply Baby par Debbie Bliss. Quand je lui ai demandée comment je pourrais lui rendre la pareille, elle a répondu que je pouvais tricoter quelque chose pour son fils, comme sa naissance était prévu pour octobre dernier.

I love making baby clothes. What a great way to learn construction techniques for larger pieces! I also love thinking about the little one the piece is intended for when I'm making it - for me, once I start on a piece with a little one in mind, it has to go to that person!

J'adore tricoter les vêtements pour les bébés. Quelle meilleure façon d'apprendre les techniques de construction pour les pièces plus large ! J'aime aussi à penser au bébé pour lequel je fabrique le projet - pour moi, une fois que je commence un projet pour un bébé, il faut que le cadeau aille à ce bébé-là !

However, I burned out on making baby clothes since that was practically all I made the year after I learned to knit. On the other hand, I was really starting to enjoy making toys for children. Toys are great because children don't outgrow them. And they especially don't outgrow their teddy bears. Well, if they're anything like me, they don't, since I still have mine. Someone else I know that I happen to live with still has theirs as well (ahem).

Néanmoins, je me suis épuisé à faire les vêtements pour les bébés m'étant consacré uniquement à ceci pendant un an. Alors, j'ai commencé à m'amuser à tricoter des jouets pour enfants. Les jouets sont formidables parce que les enfants ne deviennent jamais trop grands, et ils ne deviennent jamais trop grands pour leur premier nounours. C'est à dire, si ils sont comme moi, parce que j'ai toujours le mien. Quelqu'un d'autre que je connais bien avec qui je partage un toit a toujours le sien aussi.

There is a great pattern in Simply Baby for a teddy bear (Ravel it!), but I decided to take it up a notch and use some fun fur I found at Bergère de France, helpfully called Teddy. Working with fun fur is not my favorite kind of knitting and for a while I was skeptical about my idea.

Il y a un modèle super dans "Simply Baby" pour un nounours (Ravel-le !), mais j'ai décidé d'essayer quelque chose de nouveau et de tricoter avec une laine fantaisie appellée Teddy que j'ai trouvé à Bergère de France. Travailler avec la laine fantaisie n'est pas ma façon de tricoter préferée et pendant un certain temps je restais sceptique à propos de mon idée.

Finally, I started putting it all together and I fell in love.

Enfin, j'ai commencé à l'assembler et je suis tombée amoureuse.

This project came out even better than I imagined. Not only was this bear super-cute, but he is super-squishy and perfect for cuddles. In this picture you can get a better idea of the texture:

Since Teddy is going to live with an American family living in South Korea, he'll be too far away to perform surgery if he ever needs it, so he was sent with the rest of a skein as insurance.

Parce que Teddy va vivre avec une famille américaine en Corée du Sud, il vivra trop loin pour avoir recours à la chirurgie si besoin est, donc il lui a été envoyé avec, le reste d'une pelote comme assurance.

I love this project so much that I'm determined to make another one for our little French Fry, who is due at the beginning of November. I can only hope that the little boy that received this teddy bear enjoys it as much as I enjoyed making it!

J'aime ce projet aussi bien que je suis résolue à le faire encore pour notre fils French Fry qui est attendu pour le debut de novembre. Je peux seulement espèrer que le petit garçon qui a récu ce nounours l'aime aussi beaucoup comme j'ai aimé le fabriquer !

My first repairs / Mes premières réparations

If you've been reading my other blog for a while, you may remember when I completed my first sweater for a full sized-adult (photo on flickr here, project page on Ravelry here). What I didn't know when I asked Stéph to model it for a photo is that I had dropped a stitch in one of the sleeves.

In fact, I didn't find it until he'd worn it once or twice and I had washed it! Luckily, it hadn't unraveled too much. Instead of pulling out my knitting books, I decided to see if I couldn't figure out a way to fix the problem on my own.

Si vous lisez mon autre blog, vous pouvez vous rappeler quand j'ai terminé mon premier pull taille adulte (photo sur flickr ici, page du projet sur Ravlery ici). Mais quand j'ai demandé à Stéph de poser pour la photo, je ne savait pas que j'avais lâché une maille dans une des manches.

En fait, je ne l'ai remarqué qu'après il l'ait porté une ou deux fois et aussi après le premier lavage ! J'ai eu de la chance qu'il ne se soit pas trop demêlé. Plutôt que de sortir mes livres de tricot de la bibliothèque, j'ai décidé d'essayer de réparer le problème toute seule.

First, I took out my trusty crochet hook and worked "up the ladder," or hooked each dropped stitch from the front, until I couldn't go up anymore.

Premierement, j'ai pris mon crochet dans la main et j'ai "monté l'échelle" (c'est à dire que j'ai crocheté chaque maille de l'avant) jusqu'à ce que je ne puisse plus monter.

Then, I took a good amount of leftover yarn and threaded it through the loop.

Et puis j'ai enfilé une bonne partie du reste de la laine dans la boucle.

Once I knew the loop was secure on the piece of thread, I turned the sleeve inside out and threaded each end through to the back side. From here I weaved each end in for one to two inches to be sure it would be secure.

Une fois que je fus sure que la boucle était bien fixée sur la laine, j'ai tourné la manche à l'envers et enfilé chaque bout dedans. Enfin, j'ai tissé chaque bout d'environ trois à cinq cms pour être certaine qu'elle était bien fixée.

Ta-da! All fixed with no obvious signs of a problem on the outside. This sweater was worn quite freqently during the winter and spring this year, and washed frequently, too, and to tell you the truth, I'd forgotten that I'd even done the repairs until I was going through the pictures I had saved.

Et voila ! Tout réparé sans aucun signe de problème ! Ce pull a été porté souvent pendant l'hiver et le printemps cette année - et souvent lavé aussi - et pour dire honnêtement j'avais presque oublié que j'avais fait les réparations jusqu'à ce que je prépare mes photos pour ce blog.

Vivi discovered blogging the same day she moved to France. Married in the summer of 2004 in the United States, she began married life in her husband Stéph's native Champagne region at the start of the school year. As Stéph made his way back to work as a teacher, Vivi followed her sister's advice and found a friend's website, or blog, recounting her adventures in Germany. Encouraged by the facility of this new medium, Dispatches From France was born the same day and she has been blogging about her adventures as a confused American in France ever since.

Vivi started knitting thanks to the encouragement of a good friend made through blogging in February, 2007. Surprised at how easily she took to the craft, she quickly went from scarves to sweaters, constantly striving to improve her skills. However, after a year of intense knitting, she burned out with her projects slowly skittering to a halt. Inspired by a group on Ravelry (link works for members only) promoting knitters and crocheters to come together in appreciation of their crafts, Vivi started crocheting in June, 2008. Not only did she fall in love again with yarn and a new skill, but it renewed her interest in her knitting projects and spurred her to create this blog.

Suis le fil (pronounced "swee le feel") literally means "follow the thread" in French. Figuratively speaking, Vivi invites you to follow the thread of her crafting adventures! She also hopes that by blogging in both English and French she can improve her skills in her second language and meet new crafters working in her adopted home.

Vivi a découvert les blogs le jour même où elle s'est installée en France. Mariée en été 2004 aux Etats-Unis, elle a commencé sa vie conjugale en Champagne avec son mari, Stéph, à la rentrée scolaire.
